Adversity + Carrot, Egg or Coffee Bean?
Here’s a story about the different ways we experience life challenges. It illustrates the choices we have and may get you thinking about your life purpose and your ability to impact others through the wisdom you’ve gained from your experience.
A young girl went to her grandmother, saying how her life was very hard. She didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of struggling with one problem after another. She wanted to give up.
Her grandmother took her into the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and lit a fire under each on the stove. Once boiling, she placed fresh carrots in the first pot, fresh eggs in the second, and ground coffee beans in the third.
She let them sit and boil without saying anything. After a few minutes, she turned off the burners, removed each ingredient from its pot and placed each in a separate bowl.
Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, “Tell me what you see?” “Carrots, eggs and coffee,” she replied.
The grandmother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots, which were soft. The grandmother asked her to take an egg and break it, After pulling off the shell, the granddaughter saw the hard boiled egg. The granddaughter then sipped the coffee.
The granddaughter asked, “What does this mean?”
Her grandmother said, “Each of these three objects faced the same adversity- boiling water. And each reacted differently.
The carrots went in hard and strong. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile, but after sitting in the boiling water, its insides became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
When adversity knocks on your door, which are you? A carrot? An egg? Or coffee beans?
