We can learn a lot from our canine friends. I certainly have.
As many of you know, my dog, Shanti, an English Cocker Spaniel, has been a loving companion and a great teacher. One of the most powerful lessons he offers is how to stay conscious- being aware of what I’m thinking and feeling, and then deciding or choosing what I want to create in my life. How does he help me do that? I see him react to my energy. If I’m upset, he looks alarmed or concerned. If I’m happy, his tail wags and eyes glow. His great sensitivity serves as a perfect mirror for me to “see” myself!
He also teaches me how to live “in the moment”—without indulging in future worries or getting stuck in past guilt, regrets or resentments. So no matter what events occurred in the past, Shanti is ready to “be here now”- just as the great spiritual teachers tell us to be. A great tool, when you find yourself worrying, is to take a couple of big, deep breaths. Close your eyes and take a time out. If I just think of Shanti chilling out with the pumpkins, I can’t help but relax, breathe and smile!
Another great tool is having fun. And Shanti wastes no time- whether rolling in the snow or howling at the squirrels. He just makes me laugh.
My canine companion also teaches me about unconditional love, including forgiveness and compassion. Shanti doesn’t hold a grudge when I’m running late to take him on his walk. He greets me at the door, always waging his tail and his face scrunched with joy, no matter what. He isn’t judging or questioning… he’s just there to love me and to be loved back.
So let’s go to the dogs for a powerful lesson!
Looking forward to hearing what you find.
