Self Love & Wisdom04 Sep

This month’s dial-UP yoga class, “Self Love,” includes different mudras or hand/finger positions.  So it was a perfect gift to receive an article about Gyan Mudra.  As it suggests, use it in moments “when you need to step aside and just 42-19746689breathe.”

I love this practical application of our classes- you can select any segment and use it again and again whenever you need it.   For example, some classes have segments that increase energy, strengthen your immune system, get rid of lower back pain, sharpen your mind, or help you switch from an emotional down to up.  And each only takes a few minutes!

With so much going on in our lives, we can all use some help.  So in the spirit of this month’s class, create more love and send this to at least one person you know can benefit.

The Seal of Wisdom
Gyan Mudra

The most common mudra practice in all of yoga is Gyan Mudra. Generally speaking, in the break between postures, in the moments when you need to step aside and just breathe, gyan mudra is the go-to posture for your hands.

Mudra means “seal” and the energy that each finger attracts, when pressed lightly against the thumb, creates a balance. The thumb is also known as the “ego finger,” but this shouldn’t carry a negative connotation. Energetically, this simply means the thumb embodies the earthly part of you, that which seeks to grasp. The forefinger is the “Jupiter finger” and in creating gyan mudra, known as “the seal of wisdom,” it embodies flowing, expansive energy. When the thumb and forefinger touch, the result is a calming effect, putting you in touch with the rhythm of life. From this place of stillness you expand your view, settling into your own timeless wisdom.
