To De-Stress, Pass the Popcorn
Sounds silly- to pass the popcorn to de-stress- right? But you may find that taking an “intermission” from stress using this short vignette may just do the trick. Here it is:
You just wanna scream! Today is one of those days full of responsibilities, needs, worries, disappointments, frustrations, demands on your time, and so on. You feel like there isn’t enough time to even breathe!
As soon as this feeling arises, step back and say, “Pass the popcorn.” It’s a simple comment, but very effective.
Now, watch the hassles and demands of your life as if they were playing on the big screen, as if they were happening to another person. You may get a good laugh just from making this adjustment to your perspective.
For more depth, see how you would write this character’s script: how will he/she have to change in order to achieve his/her goals? At this distance, what can you see that the character can’t?
Once you take a deep breath and feel the relief, jump back onto the screen, dig into your life, and integrate these insights. Know that you’ve re-written the script and a better ending awaits you.
Try it and let me know.
